The Juneteenth Legacy
Juneteenth—June 19, 1865—marks the day when the last enslaved people in the United States learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. UIJ was founded to carry that spirit of liberation forward through education, ensuring that knowledge reaches every corner of the globe, no matter how long it takes to arrive.
Founding Story
UIJ was established by a coalition of educators, diaspora leaders, and technology innovators who recognized that quality higher education remained out of reach for millions. By combining online learning with a network of regional learning centers, UIJ made accredited degrees accessible to students in Haiti, across Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond.
