Credit System
UIJ operates on a semester credit-hour system. Most courses are 3 credits, with labs and intensive courses ranging from 1 to 4 credits. A typical full-time load is 12–15 credits per semester.
- Associate degree — 60 credits (approximately 2 years)
- Bachelor's degree — 120 credits (approximately 4 years)
- Master's degree — 36–48 credits (1.5–2 years)
- Doctorate — 60+ credits including dissertation (3–5 years)
Course Numbering
Courses are numbered to indicate level and progression, helping students plan their academic path from foundational to advanced study.
- 100–299 — Lower-division (first and second year, foundational)
- 300–499 — Upper-division (third and fourth year, specialized)
- 500–699 — Graduate-level courses
- 700–799 — Doctoral-level courses and dissertation
Grading System
UIJ uses a standard letter grade system. Grade point averages (GPA) are calculated on a 4.0 scale.
- A (4.0) — Excellent
- B (3.0) — Good
- C (2.0) — Satisfactory
- D (1.0) — Marginal pass
- F (0.0) — Failing
- Minimum 2.0 GPA required for graduation
Academic Policies

- Attendance — Regular participation required in all courses
- Academic integrity — Plagiarism and cheating are strictly prohibited
- Course withdrawal — Allowed through published deadlines with a 'W' grade
- Repeat policy — Students may repeat courses to improve GPA
